Over the years , the club has played host to a wide variety of people and organisations . Notable amongst these over the last decade has been the local branch of CAMRA , with whom we have developed a close and productive relationship .
Real Ale first appeared in the Red Shed during the mid 1980s and really took off in the early 1990s , at about the same time that we started getting attention from CAMRA . Real Ale gradually ousted the keg beer from our bar as many club regulars changed to drinking better tasting beer of consistent high quality (A lesson there for some pubs perhaps !).
During the average year we will serve over 300 beers at different times . To get an idea of the range, take a look at the list of some of our guest breweries below . We usually have 4 cask-conditioned beers on handpump at any one time , which should include something to suit all tastes . All are from small to medium sized breweries , the majority from Yorkshire and surrounding regions but we also import from the rest of the UK and sometimes beyond . We also keep a wide range of bottled Belgian beers. Lager drinkers are catered for with Warsteiner (4.8% - genuine German beer) Kaltenberg Hell and bottled Budvar (Czech lager).
Our beer prices (2012) currently are £2.10 to £2.70 a pint for cask beers (dependent on strength), £2.80 a pint for Warsteiner and Kaltenberg Hell Lager at £2.50 We also have Kingstone Press draught Cider at £2.50 a pint.
We are not tied to any one brewery (and do not want to be - we had a bit of a bad experience of that in the past) . However , we try to have one regular beer for those who like to stick to the same brew . At present , we are using Ossett Brewery (near Wakefield) for this .
Real ale lovers are always welcome here . Non-members will usually be expected to sign in as visitors but , occasionally , we throw our doors open to all comers and run a BEER FESTIVAL , when we can have 20 or more beers on offer at once.
To date , we have successfully run ten such events, the last one was in October 2011. A big thank you to all those who put time and effort into planning , setting up and running the festival , to the brewers of the special beers and to everyone who came along and drank all the beer (well - all but 6 gallons of it).
Comments & suggestions on the beer are welcomed . We have a box on the bar for posting them in ...
